KUALA LUMPUR: Indicating the successful branding and marketing of the country as a premier tourist destination, Malaysia received three PATA Gold Awards at the international membership association’s annual conference held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
The coveted prizes bagged are in the categories of Marketing – Primary Government Destination, which features a seven-minute long video titled A Million Experiences to Share on experiencing the country; Marketing Media – Travel Poster, for beautifully-taken photographs of local diving, the orang utan, Mount Kinabalu, Homestay and Siti Khadijah Market in Kota Bharu, Kelantan; and the Environment Education Programme, won by the Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa for the management of its waste water system.
“The awards given to Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen, the industry, and Malaysia are really something for the ministry and Malaysia to shout about. It also gives us the impetus to strive harder for the generation after us,” said Tourism Malaysia acting Director- General Datuk Haji Azizan Noordin after the ceremony.
According to Azizan, among the criteria that Malaysia met to win the awards was its emergence as the ninth most visited country in the world, and second in Asia.
“China stands at number four, and that’s with the help of its ‘Great Walls’. Malaysia doesn’t have anything like that, yet it won the hearts of tourists with its warmth, culture and of course, food,” he said.
He encouraged private sectors to plough ahead in spite of the foreseeable challenges, widen their networks and complement one another to boost the industry.
“We have avenues such as the Mega FAM programme, which is organised with the support from local and foreign airlines, Malaysian hotels and state governments,” he added.
Private sector corporate travel services company Mitra group president Tunku Datuk Seri Iskandar Tunku Abdullah said the private sector in Malaysia is in a good position for joined efforts with the Government across the platform, as not many countries have such an initiative.
“The PATA Travel Mart will be held in Manila this September, where Malaysian tour operators, hoteliers and airline companies will be able to promote their services to foreign buyers,” he said.
